Dark Moon: Environments Source: Albrecht Altdorfer

An artist of the 1400-1500's, Albrecht is claimed to be the creator of the first pure landscape painting in oil. Painting mostly landscapes, he also painted vivid religious scenes of scenes of great battles. His works, while depicting detailed landscapes, sometimes bordered expressionism, with scenes full of life and energy. His sense of perspective at first seems to be a lack of knowledge and understanding of it, however he actually purposefully offset the perspective in his paintings ever so subtly, as if referring to the art created in the centuries preceding. Whether he was keeping to tradition is uncertain, however I feel that in setting the perspective a little of, it better separates the image, cutting it into clearly defined, individual layers.
